Safe and Sound

I would like to state for the record that the worst thing to happen to me today was a splitting headache. And that that headache has absolutely nothing to do with the metro, or any public transportation.

This morning, when I got on the tram to go to school, I did notice things were different from usual (not that I have a great idea what is usual in this town, yet). We packed into the tram like sardines. It took me 45 minutes to shove my way from the entrance door to the nearest exit door, two meters away. Luckily, I was able to get off on my stop. It was packed so tightly, somebody near the front fainted and we passed bottles of water up to them. I got to school late, and then I found out about what happened.

The details, so far as I know, are that at around 7:50 and 8:30 (if I recall), there were explosions at the metro stations Парк Културы (Park Kultury) and Лубянка (Lubianka). Both are these are on the Red Line, which is the only line available for me to take into the center of the city. Quite luckily, I do not need to take the metro to school. Also quite luckily, both occurred before I ever would have even been on the metro. Also also luckily, I live for enough away from Park Kultury that I could go about my whole morning ignorant of what had happened.

So, really. I'm totally okay and nobody should worry. I'm not worried at all. Life carries on. What happened is a tragedy and a nightmare, and I feel for the families of the people who died and for all those injured. I also feel very lucky that I wasn't there. However, I'm not worried. And you shouldn't be worried. In fact, the one thing I'm worried about most is still figuring out how the hell to speak Russian.

  1. Glad to hear you are OK. I was worried when I heard about the explosions.

Remember you could in Athens where even a bike can be a pipe bomb and any random bag in the "city" parking garage is a threat.

    Have fun!
