I spent the last couple of hours sipping wine and speaking with my host mother, Svetlana Ivanovna, about politics and war, history, food, and wine. We talked about past presidents and recent ones, Russia's role in Europe, and about why war isn't necessary. I might not have always understood her or been able to express myself fully, but it's nice to know that we aren't so different despite being generations and hemispheres apart in origin. It's very striking just how similar the US and Russia really are.
